#AnneHathaway Before I let go, I want to introduce to you the reason you all have been introduced to me in the first place. In 2016, I worked with Hope Dector and @lewispants in partnership with the Barnard Center for Research on Women and Project NIA to create ‘Don’t Be A Bystander” in preparation for the uptick in hate motivated violence related to the 2016 election. Project NIA is a grassroots organization that works to end the arrest, detention, and incarceration of children and young adults by promoting restorative justice practices, and is founded and directed by community organizer, educator, and curator Mariame Kaba. Mariame’s work focuses on ending violence, dismantling the prison industrial complex, transforming justice, and supporting youth leadership development. Mariame has also co-founded other organizations, including the Chicago Freedom School, the Chicago Taskforce on Violence against Girls and Young Women, the Chicago Alliance to Free Marissa Alexander, and the Rogers Park Young Women’s Action Team.Mariame is an acknowledged expert on the topic of youth incarceration, with recent appearances on NBC News, the Guardian, and Vice. She is also available to consult or facilitate workshops on topics such as juvenile justice, youth leadership development, the prison industrial complex, curriculum development and evaluation, and research support. Mariame has received numerous honors and awards (mariamekaba.com/honors) for her work over the years, including the 2019 Morton Deutsch Award for Social Justice, the 2019 Visionary Voice Award, and the Essence Magazine 2018 #Woke100.Mariame is currently a researcher in residence on race, gender, sexuality, and criminalization at the Social Justice Institute of the Barnard Center for Research on Women. #AnneHathaway @badgalriri just posted the photos of two little girls, Rosalie Avila and Ashawnty Davis, who committed suicide because of bullying.
I just want to say to anyone who is going through this that, in my experience, a person is not bullied because he, she and/or they have done anything in particular. The bullies bully because they are in pain and are frightened about something (they may not even know this) and it makes them feel powerful to try and destroy what they cannot understand. It doesn’t work; they are still afraid and in pain and then they get angry because they are still hurting, and so the bullying goes on and on.
I’d like to say they will grow out of it, but they may not and that has nothing to do with you.
All I can tell you is that there are way more people in the world whose hearts are loving and kind and who will never ever treat anyone like how you are being treated, and you will find them as you get older and those are the people who will fill your world.
I feel you, sweetheart. I’ve been you. Keep your light going no matter what. Even if we never meet, know that I’m cheering for you.
Also, if you go to school with anyone being bullied, consider making a plan to help such as inviting two friends (and encourage them to invite two friends and keep going) and when you see bullying occur, make a protective circle around whoever is being bullied. Don’t become violent yourselves. Just chant- do not scream- the words “only love here” over and over. The bullies may laugh at you. Do not react. The bullies may call you names.
Do not react. Just keep chanting “only love here.” Please be courageous Warriors of Light and help. You will change the world.
