Making the iconic Cabat tote requires the highest level of skill. Creating it was the first challenge that Tomas Maier posed to Bottega Veneta’s artisans when he became creative director. The original seamless tote required nearly 15 prototypes before Maier was finally happy with the finished product. At Chiswick House, artisans from our atelier in Montebello Vicentino demonstrated how the Cabat is woven. It’s a process that requires two full days of work and two artisans working in tandem. The bag is woven around a wooden mold placed on a tripod which lets the fettucce—as the double-face nappa leather strips are called—to hang down straight as the artisan works. The weaving must be done standing up. #TheHandoftheArtisan

Our Parco Palladiano collection of fragrances, introduced in 2016, is inspired rather poetically by a journey through a single day in a Palladian garden, from dew-covered magnolia in the morning to a sun-drenched rose, clipped and brought into the house for the evening. In the Link Room at Chiswick House, nine mirrored plinths showcased the main note of each fragrance, while two of the five renowned “noses” who created the scents with Tomas Maier, Mylene Alran and Alexis Dadier, were present to explain the complexities of each to guests. #TheHandoftheArtisan

Lesson #5: Equally Elegant. The idea of symmetry is deeply rooted in Palladianism, which took its cues from classical Greek and Roman buildings. Clearly, symmetry—and simplicity—never go out of style. Witness the pure beauty of the Queen’s House in London and the elemental shape of The Knot minaudiere, which has allowed it to be reinterpreted in countless materials and remain a favorite style. #TheHandoftheArtisan.
