“Girls from the wrong side of the tracks.” When I read an interview with Greta Gerwig in The New York Times promoting her movie Lady Bird, two things surprised me. First being, my genuine desire to see this movie. Second, that I actually finished a whole Times interview without speed reading or skipping paragraphs. Lady Bird captures so much of what I had forgotten or thought unimportant about my teenage years. It was uncomfortable to watch in moments as I drew so many comparisons to Lady Bird’s upbringing and ambition to that of my own. I felt transported to my sixteen year old self, living in Bournemouth, singing musical theatre and applying for scholarships at Dance School. Back then I ached to escape my small town and move to London. Like Lady Bird I was never really the best at anything, and yet I hustled my way through with a relentless desire to be more than where I came from. After seeing Lady Bird tonight I felt a strong need to call my Mum and I think that is what sets this story apart from just one I relate to on a personal level. Greta captures the fear and angst of a Mother who loves her daughter very much but can’t tell her that she likes her. I never even thought what my mum went through when I was applying for schools in London nor did I consider her feelings when she had to pick me up from friend’s houses who had so much ‘more than me.’ I am so grateful for this story, for movies, growing up in Bournemouth but mostly, I am grateful to you Mum. PS obviously grateful to @smashleybell for accompanying me so I didn’t have to go to the cinema alone tonight. And for taking a better photo than me which I evidently had to steal because all mine came out blurry. Love you. #ladybird #gretagerwig #bestmovie
