#GulPanag Today is World EV day. In a few years, every day will be EV day .I got my first EV, the @mahindraelectric E20 two door, over 6 years ago. On my birthday infact , in 2015. It was a surprise from HIM! It’s been my primary vehicle of commute since. It’s fun to drive as it has instant acceleration due to no lag in power delivery. Very compact to park. We upgraded to a 4 door in 2017, to make access easier for offspring . (Photo 2.)The most efficient ICEs have about 48% efficiency. And those aren’t street cars. It’s the super cars .First generation electric cars started with about 90% efficiency.💁🏻‍♀️Today there are a host of electric cars to choose from. The @hyundaiindia Kona, @tatamotorsgroup Nexon, @mgmotorin ZS and of course the @mercedesbenzind EQC, @audiin etron ( I saw the Etron LMPs in action at Le Mans and 10 years ago), @jaguar_india Ipace . And a lot more coming starting with the. @volvocarsin XC 40 soon.The EV two wheeler space is likely to mature faster with a host of offerings from established players like @heroelectricindia , @tvsmotorcompany , @honda2wheelerin as well as folks like @atherenergy , @ampere_ev_ , @revoltmotorsin and @olaelectric The most compelling argument in favour of EVs isn’t the lack of emission- but the pure economics of running them. And given the ever rising fuel prices ( to repay oil bonds or not), it’s only getting stronger.Naysayers argue that if EVs are charged with dirty power, are they really clean? Fair point . India is adding renewable power generation ( including solar) faster than any country. In the next few years, a greater proportion of our power will come from clean sources . #GulPanag Soneva DiaryDay 4We spent the whole day in the water. Literally. Our red faces and shoulders proof. We went into the water right after breakfast. Nihal with his arm floats. But he refused to leave me. And wanted to swim in my back. Like the snail that rides on the whale’s back in the Julia Donaldson book. So I snorkelled with Nihal on my back. We then went to our usual haunt, Out of the Blue, where the husband urged me to go on the slide. Again. To film it on my phone. By lunch time the water is really choppy and it’s a task getting back on the ladder. With one hand holding the phone, it’s even harder to swim.🙈I ended up going thrice. To record it for Nihal. And Instagram ! 💁🏻‍♀️The first time the I switched off video by mistake . 🙈 The second time front facing camera. The third time rear facing camera. I first came to Soneva two decades ago. It was the first resort of its kind I had been to. Being young and impressionable, and not so well travelled then, I concluded after that visit that it was the ‘best’ resort.Coming back again, older and wiser, I have to say that it still ranks as one of the finest properties I have been too. Not just because of its stunning setting and layout , but because of the the experience it offers. And that it has sustained its position as one ofthe finest resorts, over the years- not an easy feat given that there are newer resorts are coming up everyday, upping the bar. From putting in place ‘waste to wealth ‘practices, being 100% carbon neutral, converting wasteland into living islands and under the Soneva Foundation supporting projects that have a positive social, environment and economic impact, the team at Soneva walks the talk.There’s a recycling plant here that one can visit. There’s a glass blowing workshop where one can learn how to blow glass, and also recycle glass. Movement on the resort is on bicycles . And electric buggys for those who can’t .P.S.I do my bit by preserving and recycling things . Including but not limited to swimsuits. #GulPanag Soneva Diary Day 2We woke up rested and were greeted with the news of our RTPCR reports being negative!We would now be able mingle freely at the island resort- with out posing a risk to anyone.Meeting @ishaansingh at breakfast felt like a second homecoming. He is the F&B manager here. Our families go back decades, thanks to our common fauji connection. (And I had completely forgotten that he works here 🙈)Breakfast was by the beach. The Soneva Food experience is unique. And extravagant to say the least. There’s a cheese room. A salad room. A fruit room. A pastry and cereal room. Also an ice cream room!The biggest challenge is to get Nihal to eat. He’s usually amenable to eating at breakfast ( probably on account of the overnight fast 💁🏻‍♀️). I make the most of it and make sure he eats eggs and muesli. We headed out kayaking right after . In a transparent Kayak! On our last trip to the Maldives ( Pre Covid) Nihal enjoyed being on the kayak. He had clearly forgotten .🙈 All he wanted was to come back ashore .💁🏻‍♀️ We had lunch at Out of the Blue- an incredible South East Asian restaurant in the water. Nihal slept off half way through . And we spent the next 3 hours lazing there . Till suddenly remembering that we had a sunset dolphin cruise planned!We cycled like mad to make it to the jetty- making it with one minute to spare . Phew. We spotted a great many spinner Dolphins. 🐬 Nihal and his mother equally excited.About the cycles. From the time when I first came to Soneva , 2 decades ago, to now , their retro cycles have always stood out. Each guest is issued one. And that ‘s how we must get around the Island that’s spread out over a kilometre and half in length and about 400 metres in width. Sustainability is not just a talking point . #GulPanag Soneva DiaryDay 1We’d been planning a trip to the Maldives for many months now. Any kind of travel,specially oversea, is understandably challenging. Lots of restrictions, and regulations to comply with. Despite it all, we wanted to head out, as Nihal had been cooped up for quite a while, and more than us, we felt he needed to experience the outdoors. (We took him camping last weekend. ) Next was sun, sand and blue waterComing back to the Maldives is therapeutic at multiple levels. Now more than ever. And coming back to Soneva Fushi is very special. ( More on that later)We took a 9AM flight from Delhi to Male. 3 hours and 40 minutes later, we were here. An online ( exhaustive)form we filled out prior to our departure meant there were no physical forms to be filled for immigration at arrival. We carried a printout of out of the form with a QR code, and that was all. We also had our negative RTPCR reports ( including Nihal’s- his first) and vaccination certificates ( bearing the PM’s photos)A 40 minute sea plane ride ( on @discoversoneva’s own Twin Otter 🦦 🦦 with a very luxurious seating configuration ) had us landing in the middle of the ocean, disembarking on a jetty, 400 metres from the resort shore. We were escorted to our villa , where we underwent another RTPCR test( by far the gentlest test done so far!). And we were to sequestered there till the result came the next morning.We spent the evening playing in the pool, and the sea( the beach is 20 metres from our villa). Nihal made the most of the outdoor shower area- and graduated to taking a shower on his own! In fact, he took 3! “ I’m just having a shower and coming”. He ran around the villa till he was ready to pass out . And we retired after a long , but lovely day . #GulPanag Amazing how the filter ( Clarendon) changes the grey skies to something brighter!These pictures to me are beautiful without a filter. Lush green , wet grass, Nihal, @vegasandgina and the icing on the cake – the orange flowers from the gulmohar tree!But with a filter they’re much ‘brighter’. And that got me thinking. The world is as we choose to see it. We have the power to see things as they are , or see them through a chosen filter. The filter could be negativity ( glass half empty type) positivity, learning, happiness …. Unlike Instagram, the filters through which we choose to see the world are endless. How do you see your world? And more importantly, how do you WANT to see your world ?
