Roughly 2.2 million people are incarcerated in the United States, an increase of 1.9 million since 1972. America professes to be the land of the free, yet it has the world’s largest prison population – with one-quarter of the globes prisoners, and just 5% of the total population.

Disproportionately America’s prisons are filled with Black bodies.

This criminal (in)justice system, ripe with racial discrimination, stigmatizes, profiles, and targets young Black men for arrest at a young age, having its roots in their hyper-policed neighborhoods that they are raised in, and sadly extending into what should be a safe space—the classroom, via the school to prison pipeline.

Meek Mill is a victim of this systemic oppression.

Yes, there needs to action surrounding sentencing reform, but there needs to also be action taken around abolishing the racialized norms of injustice that can lead to Meek Mill serving 2-4 years in prison for non-violent parole violations, and Brock Turner serving 3 months in prison for three felony counts of sexual assault. 📸: @karlfergusonjr

It’s hard to believe that’s it’s been a year since the first Know Your Rights Camp. Our hope was simple, we wanted to help the people.
We wanted to provide the young folks with resources to help them navigate their daily experiences as Black and Brown people in America.
We also wanted to help local organizations and community leaders amplify their messages.

We wanted the focus of the camp to be on human rights, because often times it is our rights as human beings are what’s being violated on a daily basis. We wanted the youth to know:

1. YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE FREE.

2. YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE HEALTHY.

3. YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE BRILLIANT.

4. YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE SAFE.

5. YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE LOVED.

6. YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE COURAGEOUS.

7. YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE ALIVE.

8. YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE TRUSTED.

9. YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE EDUCATED.

10. YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO KNOW YOUR RIGHTS.

We all know that the work is not done and that the struggle continues.

This day will always be special to me and I want to thank everyone that helped make it possible.

I was in Harlem w @nessnitty having an amazing conversation w/ the freshmen class of Dream. Seeing all of your faces gave me hope and motivation we can make this world a better place. We hope you enjoy your brand new backpacks and are ready for the school year 🏾RP @wearedream – A few weeks ago, @kaepernick7 donated 25,000 to DREAM as part of his million dollar pledge. Today, he and @nessnitty stopped by to talk to our founding 9th graders about activism, taking risks, and starting difficult conversations. We're so grateful to have friends who believe in our youth and their future. #WeAreDREAM

This violation that happened against my Brother Michael Bennett @mosesbread72 is disgusting and unjust. What do you think happens to people without fame and wealth? I stand with Michael and I stand with the people.
